Curriculum

Your child will study a wide range of subjects during their time at Woodpecker Hall Academy.
The school curriculum includes the ‘national curriculum’, as well as religious education and sex education.
The national curriculum is a set of subjects and standards used by primary and secondary schools so children learn the same things. It covers what subjects are taught and the standards children should reach in each subject.

Key stages
The national curriculum is organised into blocks of years called ‘key stages’ (KS). At the end of each key stage, the teacher will formally assess your child’s performance.

You can find out what your child is learning in the classroom each term below, as well as information on each of the national curriculum subjects in detail.

National Curriculum Subjects

We perceive the National Curriculum statements as providing the end outcomes for our children. We have carefully sequenced and developed knowledge and skill progression documents for all areas of learning, starting in Nursery and progressing to Year six.

Each curriculum subject is carefully mapped out, from Nursery to Year 6, showing the key substantive and disciplinary knowledge and skills as well as vocabulary to be learned, consolidated and built-on over time as vocabulary to be taught as part of the unit.

The progression documents for each subject detail how teaching links to prior knowledge and skills and each year group builds on previous learning.

Children will develop an appreciation of art, craft and design and know how they reflect and shape our history and culture.

From Nursery to year 6, children will study a range of artists, craft makers, designers and architects along with exploring a variety of media, materials, tools and techniques.

From Nursery to Year 6, students will engage with three main aspects of the computing curriculum:

Computer Science: Children will learn what algorithms are, how they are implemented as programs on digital devices, and how these devices execute the programs. By the end of Year 6, students will be able to create and debug simple programs.

Information Technology: Students will learn to use technology purposefully to create, organize, store, manipulate, and retrieve digital content, as well as to communicate and collaborate online.

Digital Literacy: This crucial component ensures that pupils develop practical knowledge in staying safe online. They will understand the importance of keeping personal information private and recognize appropriate behavior while using the internet.

Throughout their journey from Nursery to Year 6, children will use a variety of digital tools to enhance their learning experience, applying what they’ve learned to solve problems both hypothetical and real.

To inspire children to think creatively, design and make products that solve real and relevant problems.

Design and technology is sequenced and linked across the school with a focus on designing, making and evaluating. From nursery to year six, through innovative design, children will create products that have a positive impact on the school, the community and the wider world.

The overarching aim for English in the national curriculum is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written language, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment. The national curriculum for English aims to ensure that all pupils:

– read easily, fluently and with good understanding

– develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information

– acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language

– appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage

– write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences

– use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas

– are competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and participating in debate.

The intent

To equip children with a high standard of spoken and written language, ready for the next stage of learning.
Children will develop a love of reading, acquire a wide range of vocabulary, become competent oral communicators and enjoy expressing themselves through writing.
From Nursery to Year six children will be exposed to a wide range of quality literature and be given the opportunity to speak fluently and with confidence in any context.
Children will develop a range of writing skills that allow them to communicate effectively for variety of purposes and audiences.

To develop children’s fascination about the world, the people around them as well as their place in it.

Children will develop a love of Geography and build a geographical overview of the world.

From Nursery to year 6 children will study local, national and global geography.

They will be able to ask and answer questions, understand diverse places, people and resources, whilst developing a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human features and processes.

Children will develop a love of history and an ability to think critically, ask questions and develop their own opinions and viewpoints when using sources of information.

They will reflect, reason, debate and evaluate as they become young historians with an appreciation of world history.

From Nursery to Year Six children will study local, national and global history and be able to place historical events and significant people on a timeline.

They will develop a chronological understanding of history, identifying themes and making connections about the way of life between different periods of time.

The national curriculum for maths aims to ensure that all pupils:

• become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately

• reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language

• can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

Intent

To be curious about maths and explore how mathematics is integral to the world around them.

We enable children to succeed in everyday life by mastering essential financial literacy.

From Nursey to year 6 children will become confident and fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics and overtime will reason and problem solve increasing complex concepts.

To nurture children’s appreciation for the universal language of music, empowering them to develop their creativity and self-confidence.

Children will develop an appreciation of music by performing, listening to, reviewing and evaluating music from a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, written by composers from across the world.

From Nursery to year 6 children will build their listening and appraising, singing, performing, composing and improvising skills.

They will become increasingly familiar with the inter-related dimensions of music (rhythm, pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre and texture).

They will also develop their knowledge of musical theory and notation and have the opportunity to access and make progress in at least one musical instrument.

To understand the importance of exercise on our body and mind and foster a love of physical activities and sport.

Physical education is sequenced and linked across the school with a focus on the ability to acquire and develop skills, develop tactics and communicate using key vocabulary.

Children will collaborate, perform and evaluate their own and other’s work.

From nursey to year six, children will have a wide range of physical opportunities and experiences.

They will be given the chance to lead, develop confidence and sporting spirit.

They will work independently and as part of a team whilst competing with others.

To nurture and develop responsible and well-rounded human beings and help children develop strategies and skills to have a happy and successful adult life.

Our school PSHE curriculum will teach children; life skills, behaviours and attitudes, in order to thrive in the challenges of an ever-changing world.  Children will be taught about the fundamental building blocks and characteristics of positive relationships and health including puberty.

The knowledge and attributes gained will support their own and others’ wellbeing and achievements; enabling them to become successful and happy adults who make a meaningful contribution to society.

To grow children’s awareness and understanding of religions and beliefs as well as nurture their spiritual development in order to become respectful citizen

Through the exploration of the six principle religions of Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Sikhism and Buddhism children will develop a sense of identity and belonging as well as the ability to question, reflect, relate and compare beliefs, lifestyles and symbolism.

From Nursery to year 6 children will develop respect for themselves and others as well as tolerance for other people’s views and beliefs to flourish as adults within a multicultural world.

To enhance children’s inquisitive nature and understand how science impacts our world and the future.

Biology, Chemistry and Physics are sequenced and linked across the school with a focus on scientific enquiry.

Children will develop a love of science and an ability to plan, observe, record, conclude and evaluate.  From nursery to year six children will discover the wonders of science, develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding, be able to question, reason and make links to the world around them.

To experience other cultures and languages and learn new ways of thinking about language.

High-quality languages education fosters pupils’ curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world.

The teaching enables pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.

It also provides opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read simple text for a purpose.

Language teaching provides the foundation for learning further languages at Key Stage 3.

As a parent, you play an important role in your child’s education. It’s essential for you to understand what your child is learning in class in order to support their academic growth and success. That’s where our curriculum resources come in.
